The Power Of One Voice
Yesterday I stood in the Grande Teatro of Pompeii.
I wanted to understand more about voice resonance.
No microphone.
No amplification.
I’m a total nerd when it comes to voice stuff so I had such a rush hearing my voice at different volumes and intensities.
This space was designed two thousand years ago, so that a single human voice could carry with clarity, authority, and calm power.
The Romans understood something we often forget today,
Gravitas isn’t about volume, It’s about architecture.
– The architecture of the room.
– The architecture of the message.
– The architecture of the voice.
When I work with leaders, I often talk about creating your own “perfect auditorium”. A space where your voice doesn’t push, perform, or compete, but lands.
That comes from:
• Precision, not projection
• Stillness, not speed
• Intention, not excess
You most likely won’t have the luxury of a Roman theatre at your disposal, but whenever you need to understand the impact of your voice, find a large room, speak at different volumes and find your perfect delivery.
Pompeii reminds us that when everything is aligned a voice doesn’t need to fill the space, it needs to shape it.
