From intern to expert
As an intern, if someone had told me that 30 years later I’d be coaching Fortune 500 CEOs, speaking at international conferences, voice training Toastmasters in Asia and the US, and producing online video courses for thousands of executives globally I’d have said, “Seriously, me?”
At university I liked to study, but it was when I got my first internship that I really started learning – all about the world of TV, film and music videos. London in the 1980’s was alive with creativity and I was right in the centre of the action. True, I was a little bit starstruck working on video shoots with Dire Straits, A-ha and George Michael, (this shows my age!) but I fell in love with the process of film making – film shoots, editing suites, audio dubbing, booking actors and voice artists.
Another internship, this time at the BBC, opened a window of opportunity after graduation – an assistant film editor’s job. Put to work on multi-episode documentaries, acclaimed TV dramas and feature films, this is where my love of voice began. Incredibly, I won a place on the BBC Television Director’s Training Course under full scholarship, writing, shooting and editing my own film, under the guidance of the most creative people I had ever met.
So, what did I do next? Pack a bag and move to Asia of course!

Arriving In Asia
A chance meeting with a global publishing company landed me my first job in Hong Kong – as an audio director and producer, which in turn led to establishing myself as the go-to director for the ‘big three’ publishers – Pearson, Oxford University Press, and Macmillan. I recently worked out I’ve spent 20 years and over 10,000 studio hours directing teams of voice over artists to deliver 100% perfect audio recordings for the global publishing markets. Having put the work in, I can confidently say I know the key skills that define a good voice.
And my own work as a voice artist? Early on I discovered a love for the microphone. Thirty years later, and I’ve voiced TV commercials, corporate videos, documentary series, E-learning programs, cartoons and promos. There’s something amazing about bringing a script to life with the voice.
My Asian Success Story
As the need for voice talent grew, I founded a multi-lingual voice talent agency – All Voice Talent – the first of its kind in Hong Kong. People would often ask me, ‘How can I become a voice over artist?’ So I created a voiceover training course, coaching people to turn their passion for voice acting into a money-making career.
Demand for the vocal skills I taught spilled over into the vast financial industry that is Hong Kong, so I created voice coaching programs for financial and legal professionals – teaching communication skills for impact, power and authority. Since then, I’ve coached business professionals from a wide variety of industries; financial, legal, media, real estate, accounting, entertainment, hospitality and retail, all with one goal in mind – to help good speakers become GREAT speakers.
I’ve coached some of the top CEOs across Asia, delivered webinars to their global teams, trained TEDx speakers, created hugely popular online video courses, and presented workshops throughout Asia and beyond; Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai, Sydney, Dubai, London, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Ho Chi Min, Hong Kong and Macau.
Over my 30 year journey from intern to expert I’ve come to know the human voice inside and out and I’m passionate about sharing my knowledge and expertise to help others find their true voice, and that includes you.
